Southampton got the better of West Ham in an entertaining 3-2 win that saw Marko Arnautovic dismissed early on for an elbow.
- Southampton 3 West Ham 2
- Gabbiadini on target early on
- Arnautovic dismissed
- Tadic on the spot
- Hernandez with a brace
- Austin wins it with late penalty
It started badly for Southampton with Winston Reid stretchered off the field during the warm-up, and got worse when Marco Gabbiadini opened the scoring with just 11 minutes played.
Arnautovic then stupidly got himself sent off on 33 minutes before Dusan Tadic netted a 38th minute penalty.
Javier Hernandez (45, 74) scored two to level the scores but Charlie Austin made no mistake from the penalty spot in the third minute of stoppage time to claim all three points.
There were numerous errors at the beginning of the tie as both sides tried to impose themselves.
After a sloppy start, it was West Ham with the first chance, but Arnautovic screwed his shot just wide after a great ball through from Michail Antonio.
The Hammers though were soon a goal down as Gabbiadini fired across Joe Hart on the left of the pitch following a great ball from Nathan Redmond down the flank.
Hart comfortably saved from Steven Davis as the Saints began to find their stride while at the other end Fraser Forster blocked a diving header from Arnautovic from a good Javier Hernandez low cross.
Players started to get riled up as Dusan Tadic threw his weight around with some hefty challenges before West Ham's day got decidedly worse as Arnautovic was red carded for an elbow on Jack Stephens, all this before Tadic put Southampton two goals up when he netted a 36th minute penalty.
Jose Fonte found himself the wrong side of Davis and pulled him back.
Davis blazed a 42nd minute shot well wide after Redmond's cross was deflected into the path, while to add more drama to this already enthralling game, was a typical poachers goal from Hernandez with a minute of the half remaining after Forster had saved from Antonio to get them back into the tie.
Cedric Soares hit the side netting at the start of the second half and after a penalty appeal was waved away, Gabbiadini clipped the crossbar with a great shot.
Hart kept out Tadic on 62 minutes before Hernandez astonishingly scored his second of the game on 72 minutes to level the action.
Aaron Cresswell found substitute Diafra Sakho who forced Forster to come out of his goal and push his effort onto the crossbar, only for Hernandez to smash home from close range when the ball dropped to him.
Shane Long then headed in from close range but Ryan Bertrand had fouled Hart in the build up before Fonte deflected a Redmond shot onto his crossbar in the dying minutes.
But such has been West Ham's luck that they lost the game with the final kick of the ball as Austin scored from the penalty spot after Pablo Zabaleta fouled Maya Yoshida.
