Diego Costa insists on Atleti return

Chelsea striker Diego Costa is trying to force through a return to Atletico Madrid as his club insist he must return to training.

It has been clear since the start of the transfer window that Costa’s time at Stamford Bridge is over, but he has yet to properly depart, with the Premier League season already under way.

Amid the threat of legal action from the Blues, Costa remains adamant that the only viable outcome is for him to re-sign with former team Atleti.

“My destination is already set,” Costa wrote in a statement, released on Globoesporte via Football-Espana. “I must return to Atletico Madrid next season.

“It turns out that there is the impasse that Chelsea doesn’t want to release me. But I believe this situation will be resolved now on my return to Spain.”

Costa first broke ranks with Chelsea in the middle of last season when he was subject to overtures from a wealthy Chinese club, and started sulking when the Blues did not consider the offer.

Manager Antonio Conte managed to put that issue to the side while he and Costa focused on securing the Premier League title, but the Italian clearly lost faith in Costa, and signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid to replace him up front.

Despite him being on the market, Costa’s situation has not yet been resolved, because as far as the player is concerned there is only one possible outcome.
