How Manchester United can finish fourth AND stop Liverpool from winning the Premier League by losing to City

Manchester United are going through a rough patch and the fact that their next opponents are Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City only makes the matter worse.

With Liverpool and City involved in a title race, United fans are not quite sure whether they should support United to strengthen their top four hopes or back City to stop Liverpool from winning their first-ever Premier League title.

The Reds are currently sitting at the top of PL table, two points ahead of City, who have a match in hand. Therefore, a defeat against United could see City’s title challenge lose its steam while a win would send them a point clear of Jurgen Klopp’s men.

A United fan has come up with a combination of results which would see United qualify for the Champions League next season AND stop Liverpool from winning the PL by losing to City.

Here’s how the teams currently stand in the league:

Now if United lose to City, that would send Guardiola’s side a point clear of Liverpool at first but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will remain at 6th. And for the 20-time English champions to finish fourth and City to win the league, here’s how results of the top six sides should pan out.

Manchester City: `3 matches, 3 wins, 9 points – Total: 98 points
Liverpool: 3 matches, 3 wins, 9 points – Total: 97 points
Tottenham Hotspur: 3 matches, 3 wins, 9 points – Total: 79 points
Manchester United: 3 matches, 3 wins, 9 points – Total: 73 points
Chelsea: 3 matches, 1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss(against United), 4 points – Total: 71 points
Arsenal: 4 matches, 1 win, 2 draws, 1 loss, 5 points – Total: 71 points

This means that United will have to beat Chelsea on Sunday and hope both Chelsea and Arsenal don’t register more than five points from their remaining matches.

Here’s how fans believe tonight’s encounter between Manchester United and Manchester City will pan out:
