Gonzalo Higuain’s time at Chelsea is reportedly on its last legs with the club unlikely to extend his loan deal beyond the summer.
According to Metro, the forward is set to return to Juventus after an unsuccessful spell in West London. Reunited with former boss, Maurizio Sarri, much was expected of him. However, the Argentine marksman has failed to reproduce the exploits that led him to break Gunnar Nordahl’s long-standing Serie A record while at Napoli.
Signed on at Sarri’s insistence, the club offered him a 6-month loan deal with the option to extend it further. However, the move failed to have the impact both parties were expectant of. In spite of a bright start to his Stamford Bridge life- scoring a wonderful curler against Huddersfield on debut– the Argentine hasn’t quite taken off at the club.
He has managed only three goals in his 13 appearances with all of them coming against lowly opposition. His inability to deliver against high-calibre opposition ensured that he lost his place in the side for Chelsea’s visit to Anfield.
A point of concern for the London club is their relative lack of depth in that position. If Higuain does return to Juventus, the club may not be able to find a replacement given the transfer ban that has been slapped on them by FIFA.
