Lucas Vazquez hailed four-goal hero Cristiano Ronaldo after Real Madrid’s 6-3 win over Girona, claiming that his form is inextricably tied to Real Madrid’s.
Ronaldo scored once in the first half and three times in the second, also teeing up Vazquez for Real Madrid’s third goal. The other came from Gareth Bale after he was played through by Luka Modric.
The Portuguese star now sits just three goals behind Lionel Messi on La Liga’s top scorer’s chart — a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that the early part of his season was marred by a five-match suspension for pushing a referee and a poor run of form.
“The better Cristiano Ronaldo is, the better Real Madrid will be,” Vazquez said, according to Goal.
“Cristiano is playing at a spectacular level and it shows every day.
“If he continues like this, then he’ll be close to Messi [in the Pichichi race].”
Fellow team-mate Nacho Fernandez echoed Vazquez’s sentiments, claiming: “Cristiano is unreal. Once again this season, he’s proving that he’s the world’s best.
“He was suspended at the start of the campaign, then he wasn’t putting his chances away and that was odd for him, the fact that he wasn’t scoring. He’s now helping the team and that’s really positive for us.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Mateo Kovacic also praised Ronaldo but hailed the rest of the team for their collective performance too.
“We’re not surprised by what Cristiano does, he scores goals every single day.
“He has to be congratulated on it, but he’s not the only one because we all had great games.
“I’m thrilled for him, but the most important thing is that the team wins and it doesn’t matter who gets the goals.”
Real Madrid now sits third in La Liga, having leapfrogged Valencia with the win. Second-placed Atletico Madrid is just four points ahead of Los Blancos, but Barcelona lead Diego Simeone’s side by a mammoth 11 points.
However, Ronaldo’s form is still very much needed by Zinedine Zidane’s side as they prepare for a Champions League quarter-final showdown with Juventus. The two legs will be played out on 3&11 April.
