Messi hits 600th career goal in Atleti win

Lionel Messi passed another career landmark on Sunday when he scored his 600th career goal as Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Messi scoring the winning goal against Atleti with a sublime free-kick – a fitting way to mark the milestone.

The super strike came after 26 minutes in the top-of-the-table clash. Barca were awarded a free-kick just outside the box and Messi stepped up to curl a shot up and over the wall, beyond the despairing dive of Jan Oblak.

It was the Argentine’s 32nd goal of the season and saw Barcelona extend their lead at the top of La Liga to eight points with the win over their nearest rivals.

Of the 600 goals, 539 have come in Barcelona colours, while he’s also hit 61 goals in the blue and white of Argentina.

“There’s no one like him in the world. I don’t know what would have happened [if he’d been on the other team] nor do I want to imagine it,” Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said afterwards.

Rival coach Diego Simeone was more direct, saying: “If Messi had been wearing an Atlético shirt, we would have won.”

Either way, the plaudits poured in from across the online world.
