The visitors were made to do a lot of defending in the first half as Los Blancos dominated proceedings. However, a number of fouls from both teams disrupted the flow of the game.

The first chance came the way of the south Madrid club on 19 minutes as Angel found space on the right and cut inside before drawing a comfortable save out of Keylor Naves with a left-footed shot from 14 yards out.

But Real scored with their first attempt five minutes later when the home defence failed to clear their lines from a corner and Bale slotted home into the bottom-right corner of the net from 12 yards out.

The defending league champions continued to probe and Dani Carvajal wasn’t far off from doubling their lead on 39 minutes with a drilled effort from 22 yards out that zipped just wide of the left post.

Ronaldo got his name on the scoresheet just before half-time to put the hosts firmly on the front foot. Benzema slipped in the Portuguese forward, who was allowed to turn inside the box before shifting the ball to the left and picking out the bottom-left corner of the net from 16 yards out.

Ronaldo threatened again in stoppage time after Theo Hernandez squared the ball to him on the left, but he failed to test Emiliano Martinez with a rising effort from 22 yards out that sailed over the crossbar.

The Azulones made a bright start to the second half as Remy collected the ball on the left and shifted to his right before forcing Navas into a low save with a strike from inside the D on 46 minutes.

However, the Frenchman received his marching orders within seconds after catching Nacho in the face with a flailing arm to pick up his second booking of the match.

Benzema almost made Getafe pay in the 51st minute as he combined nicely with Bale outside the box before hitting a first-time shot straight at Martinez.

But they were given a glimmer of hope 13 minutes later when Sergio Ramos went in on Jorge Molina from behind after racing through on goal. The referee pointed to the spot and Portillo slotted his penalty down the middle to halve the deficit.

Ronaldo thought he had restored Real’s two-goal cushion on 67 minutes when he headed home Marcelo’s cross to the back post, but he was flagged for a foul in the lead-up to scoring.

Martinez produced a fine reaction save to keep out the Portugal captain from six yards out on 69 minutes after he met a low cross from the right, but the Argentine was beaten by Ronaldo’s header nine minutes later following Marcelo’s cross on the left.

Bale was denied a double twice at the death as he struck the outside of the left post with a curling shot from inside the box on the right, before being denied by Martinez at close range after latching onto Marco Asensio’s exquisite through-ball.
