The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker then scored again with 68 minutes of the match played to secure the win and Atletico’s passage to the last 16, with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline.
After the match, Simeone hailed Torres for his goals, which are his first for the season.
He said: “Fernando did well as goals are so important for a forward. He took maybe the two most difficult chances he had, with a lot of quality.”
Simeone added: “The cup can be a trap as if you relax you can find it difficult to get back into the game.
“The away goals are very valuable, so you must be focused in every moment.
“The first half was very good, we went out very strong, convinced on what we needed to do. The two goals had us in control really of the tie, although things can always turn around.”
