Lionel Messi signs new Barcelona deal

Lionel Messi has extended his stay with Barcelona, signing a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2021.

The new deal, with a buy-out clause set at a whopping €700m (£626m), should be enough to ward off interest by even the wealthiest clubs, and by the end of it he will have spent 17 years with the first team.

The Argentina international first joined Barca as a 13-year-old arriving from Newell’s Old Boys, and made his full debut at age 17.

The 30-year-old has scored a total of 523 goals in 602 appearances for Barca, helping them win everything on offer while also picking up the sport’s most prestigious personal accolades and building a reputation as one of the game’s greatest.

In a statement, the club said Messi “still has a lot more to give, which is music to the ears of all Barca fans who will get to continue marvelling at his greatness”.

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu added: “We are in luck with the Barça players. We continue to enjoy the best player in the history of football.”
