Real Madrid’s stuttering title defence continued on Wednesday after a stoppage-time goal handed Real Betis a 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid 0 Real Betis 1
- Ronaldo misses numerous chances
- Adan impressive for Betis
- Carvajal and Bale hit woodwork
- Sanabria scores last-ditch winner
Cristiano Ronaldo was particularly wasteful on his return for Los Blancos, although the visitors defended manfully and were indebted to Adan for keeping them in the contest with a string of fine saves.
As Zinedine Zidane’s side desperately threw bodies forward in search of a winner towards the end of the second half, they were caught cold at the back when Antonio Sanabria headed home in added time.

The hosts nearly fell behind on three minutes when Sanabria was afforded space inside the area for a shot that was cleared off the line by Dani Carvajal with Keylor Navas beaten.
Real settled down after the early scare and began to create numerous chances as the first half wore on. Ronaldo had the first sight at goal on 10 minutes after Sergio Ramos headed the ball back across goal at the right post, but his backheel was cleared off the line by Javi Garcia.
Victor Camarasa had Navas worried five minutes later with a long-range shot that sailed just wide of the right post, before Luka Modric sprung a counter from inside his own half that resulted in the midfielder shooting the wrong side of the right post from 16 yards out.
Modric threatened again on 22 minutes as he connected with Carvajal’s cross from the right, but steered over on the half-volley from 12 yards out.
Adan was called into action for the first time on 29 minutes to keep out Ronaldo’s low strike from the edge of the box, after the Portuguese forward had been teed up by Bale on the right.

A sloppy throw-in from Carvajal almost let in the visitors on 34 minutes, but Navas came to his team-mate’s rescue as he tipped over Fabian Ruiz’s venomous shot.
The European champions pushed for the opener before half-time, but Ronaldo failed to keep his header down from Marcelo’s 37th-minute cross and Isco forced Adan into another fine save on 42 minutes after being played in by Modric.
Ronaldo missed the target again in the 51st minute after being picked out at the back post by Gareth Bale, and Real were nearly made to pay four minutes later when Francis Guerrero got free down the right flank and advanced on goal before firing over from 16 yards out.
The woodwork then came to Betis’ aid in the 56th minute as Carvajal struck the right post on the slide from Ronaldo’s volleyed cross on the left, and Adan pulled off another good save from Toni Kroos’ swerving long-range strike nine minutes later.
Ronaldo’s woes continued when he blasted a shot high over the bar from Borja Mayoral’s cutback on the left in the 73rd minute, before a combination of Adan and the left post prevented Bale’s cheeky backheel flick from giving Real the lead two minutes later.
With time running out, Los Blancos poured forward in numbers and it proved detrimental as the Andalusians hit them with a sucker-punch in injury-time. Barragan had time and space to pick out Sanabria at the back post from the right, and the unmarked Paraguayan headed the ball across Navas into the right corner to snatch victory.
