Real Madrid have made it a habit of appointing former players in prominent positions. Both Zinedine Zidane and Santiago Solari were given the role of the Real Madrid Castilla coach, before being promoted to the senior team. And now, Los Blancos are set to place two more ‘legends’ in prominent positions, as they build towards the future.
In 2016, Real Madrid made a controversial decision to appoint Zinedine Zidane as their new manager. The Frenchman had little experience in his corner and was considered to be a gamble by Florentino Perez and Co. However, the former player led Los Blancos to three successive Champions League titles, thereby solidifying his position in the Bernabeu pantheon.
Following Zidane’s success, Real Madrid are set to continue their tradition of giving prominent coaching roles to former stars. In line for two important positions next season are Los Blancos’ greats, Raul Gonzalez and Xabi Alonso.
According to Marca, Real Madrid are preparing Raul to take over the position of the head coach of Castilla, which is the reserve side. The Spaniard will also be positioned to work closely with Zidane, in order to promote and integrate young homegrown stars.
Xabi Alonso, on the other hand, will be appointed as the head coach of Juvenil A – the youth side.
Furthermore, both the former Galacticos earned their initial coaching badges last year and will undergo further training in April and May.
