Clough happy to progress

The Blades, beaten semi-finalists in the competition last year, triumphed in their first-round replay thanks to a goal in either half from Ryan Flynn, which set up a meeting with Plymouth in the next round.
Flynn poked home from a short corner routine in the 19th minute and then made sure of the win when he raced clear 13 minutes from time.
It was a deserved victory for Clough’s men, though it could have been a different story had goalkeeper Mark Howard not produced a fine double save to deny George Cooper and Callum Saunders minutes before Flynn’s opener.
“I thought we played well and controlled the game again but you have always got that little threat in the back of your mind, they had a couple of good chances in the first half, Mark Howard made a good double save and they hit the post,” Clough said.
“But apart from that I thought we did enough going forward, we just didn’t finish off some of the moves.
“We’d have taken 2-0 before the game. We are happy with the movement in midfield and how we are controlling the game and that’s how we want to play.
“We hope a thrashing is coming but we are happy winning games and keeping clean sheets.
“Until we get (Marc) McNulty or (Michael) Higdon back on the pitch it might not happen just yet.”
Crewe boss Steve Davis knew that Howard’s miraculous double save in the first half was the decisive moment of the game.
“We had two goes at it and we didn’t do well enough at home to get through,” he said. “Having said that before they scored their first goal we had a great chance from the double save and they went up the other end and scored.
“Had we gone 1-0 up I think it would have changed the course of the game.
“Then for their first goal we were sleepy and didn’t set up quick enough and it was our responsibility to deal with the short corner.
“It was a poor goal to concede especially after having the chance to go one up at the other end.
“We didn’t create as many chances as we’d like our best chances came in the first half.
“We didn’t hurt them enough, we haven’t been able to get goals and that remains the case. That’s for me to help them by getting better strikers in. They kept going and worked hard but we just couldn’t get a goal.”
