De Ligt talks up Ajax’s Europa League chances

Matthijs de Ligt says Manchester United are favourites heading into the Europa League final but hasn’t ruled Ajax completely out of the tie.

The 17-year-old Dutch international defender, who played 11 times in the league for Ajax this season, scoring two goals, could become the youngest footballer ever to play in a European club final, if selected on Wednesday.

Speaking in the build up to the match, the young defender told NOS: “It’s a 50/50 game where Manchester United are perhaps slight favorites but if we play our game we have a chance of winning. As a defender a 1-0 win would be nice.”

He added that he has developed a lot at the Eredivisie club, where they missed out on the league title, by one point to champions Feyenoord.

He said: “I like to speak to the press ahead of matches. I learnt at school how you must address people.

“I made my Jupiler League debut last August for Jong Ajax v FC Emmen. You see how quickly things can develop. Ajax have a lot of players knocking on the door of the first team.”
