FC Twente have stripped Hakim Ziyech of the captain’s armband after he criticized the club’s decision to sack coach Alfred Schreuder and indicated that he wanted to leave.
Following a controversial interview with De Volskrant in which the Moroccan international was critical of all aspects of the club, Twente made the decision to demote the 22-year-old.
The club’s director Ted van Leeuwen said in a statement, “Let this be a signal. As a group we have to form a whole, with only one purpose and that is avoid relegation. This requires a positive contribution from everyone.”
