The hosts almost got off to a flying start when Romelu Lukaku chested the ball down in the fourth minute and played in Marcus Rashford on the left, but the striker's shot from 12 yards out came back off the right post.
Sergio Romero made the first save of the game on 12 minutes, although it was fairly routine from Alan Dzagoev's tame effort from outside the box.
Rashford found space inside the area on the left three minutes later and tested Igor Akinfeev with a placed shot that was parried away from danger by the CSKA skipper, who pulled off a superb double save from Luke Shaw's volley and Lukaku's close-range rebound in the 20th minute.
The visitors finished the first half on the front foot, with Vitinho firing over from 21 yards out before Vassili Berezutski's half-volley cleared the bar after a corner was allowed to bounce inside the area.
Vitinho saw presented with another chance in the 37th minute when Shaw's clearance broke to him, but the Brazilian blasted over from 17 yards out.
However, he played a huge part in the opener which went in off Dzagoev a few yards out, having got on the end of Mario Fernandes' low cross from the right on 45 minutes.
The Red Devils went in search of the equaliser from the restart, with Rashford surging into the area from the right and forcing Akinfeev into a sharp save at his near post on 48 minutes.
Chris Smalling failed to hit the target with a header at the back post from Juan Mata's hooked cross from the left in the 55th minute, but United were soon back on level terms.
It was a good finish from Lukaku as he directed Pogba's cross past Akinfeev on the stretch from close range on 64 minutes.
CKSA barely had time to gather themselves when the English giants struck again two minutes later, as Mata played in Rashford with a ball over the top and the youngster buried his left-footed shot past Akinfeev from 10 yards out.
Antonio Valencia gave Akinfeev more work to do on 69 minutes with a driven effort that he managed to hold onto, while Pogba failed to trouble the Russian keeper from long range in the 75th minute.
Romero had to be alert to prevent the Moscow outfit from equalising six minutes from time as he reacted quickly to deny Dzagoev from close range after a good delivery from Konstantin Kuchaev on the left.
