Borussia Dortmund’s hopes of continuing in the UEFA Champions League were handed a blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw by APOEL at Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday.
Borussia Dortmund 1 APOEL 1
- Aubameyang goes close
- Kagawa heads wide
- Toprak is denied by Perez
- Guerreiro scores, Pote equalises
Dortmund were on top and wasted a number of chances before Raphael Guerreiro went on to break the deadlock.
However, Mickael Pote equalised for the visitors against the run of play to earn a share of the spoils in this Group H clash.
Dortmund had APOEL boxed in their half straight from kick-off and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s well-struck shot on the turn from 20 yards was saved well by Nauzet Perez.
Shinji Kagawa, making his 50th appearance in the competition, then wastefully headed over Guerreiro’s accurate left-wing cross, before Perez was again sharp to keep out a stunning effort from the dangerous Christian Pulisic.
The visiting keeper then brilliantly kept out Omer Toprak’s header from Kagawa’s corner, with the visitors somehow clearing the follow-up away from danger.
However, the goal finally arrived in the 29th minute. Kagawa’s clever flick exploited a gaping hole in the visiting defence and Guerreiro coolly slotted past Perez from 10 yards out.

It was a surprise Dortmund failed to double their advantage before the break, Carlao making an unbelievable headed clearance on the goal line from Maximilian Philipp’s cross with Aubameyang lurking.
After the break, Carlao made them pay when his cutback found Pote, who turned Toprak to fire home into the bottom right-hand corner.
Kagawa dragged a shot just wide in the closing stages while Aubameyang hit the post from a header and then missed a chance deep into the final moments as Dortmund’s hopes of progressing diminished.
