Stephan El Shaarawy’s brace helped Roma to a comfortable 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday to go top of Group C.
Roma 3 Chelsea 0
- El Shaarawy bags first-half brace
- Perotti also on target for hosts
- Courtois denies Manolas
El Shaarawy put the Giallorossi in a dominant position as he followed up his first-minute opener with a good finish shortly before half-time.
The Serie A outfit continued to dominate and Diego Perotti eventually added a third goal, beating Thibaut Courtois at his near post from range with a good strike.
Roma lit up Stadio Olimpico as Eden Dzeko brought down a long ball and El Shaarawy hit it first time to send the ball flying into the corner off the outside of his foot to open the scoring in just the first minute of the match.
The Blues then had a chance to hit back as Cesc Fabregas played a good ball over the top for Eden Hazard, but the Belgian could only get his shot off at Alisson Becker from a tight angle.
Hazard had another chance on the 20-minute mark as he managed to beat two Roma defenders before letting loose a low shot straight at Becker.
Five minutes later a blocked clearance from Pedro saw the ball fall to Alvaro Morata, who was 11 yards out, but he could only hit his effort over the bar with Alisson rushing out.
Just after the half-hour mark, Dzeko again looked to combine with El Shaarawy, who just had Courtois to beat but could not replicate his earlier finish.
It did not matter, however, because just two minutes later a mistake from former Roma defender Antonio Rudiger saw El Shaarawy run onto the ball and deft flick took it past Courtois to add the second for the Rome club as they went into half-time with a two-goal advantage.

They started the second half well and Dzeko almost had a chance to add a third as he tried to flick on a cross from Perotti but the effort was wide.
Perotti himself then got onto the scoresheet as the Chelsea defence allowed him too much defence and the midfielder eased past Pedro before releasing a good shot from outside the box which beat Courtois at the near post to make it three.

The Argentine almost added another as Dzeko continued to dominate his aerial challenges which saw him tee up Perotti in the middle of the box and he hit it first time but the effort was well over.
Courtois then pulled off a great reflex save to deny Kostas Manolas, who got on the end of good cross from Radja Nainggolan to power a header towards the Belgian keeper.
It was a comfortable win for Roma, who went to the top of their group as a result, establishing a one-point advantage over Antonio Conte’s side with two matches remaining in the group stage.
