Match Summary

Bayern took the lead against the run of play when goalkeeper Sven Ulreich smashed the ball forward from a goal-kick. The Celtic defence left the ball, thinking Craig Gordon would either claim the ball or clear it.

However, Kingsley Coman used his pace to beat the keeper to the ball before cutting inside and finishing into an open net.

Celtic gave themselves hope of remaining in the Champions League when James Forrest, one of the major threats for the hosts, dinked the ball into the path of Callum McGregor, who finished low past Ulreich.

However, minutes later Hoops hearts were broken as David Alaba made inroads on the left wing before crossing the ball into the box which Martinez met to regain the lead.

The first half was a fairly comfortable one for the hosts given their 3-0 defeat in the reverse fixture.

The Hoops created their first chance through Forrest, who made a good run into the Bayern box and reversed the ball for Stuart Armstrong, but the midfielder put his chance wide from a few yards out.

Bayern struggled to settle into the game with Celtic pressing their midfield well, forcing them into errors. Forrest in particular was causing problems for the visitors with his movement down the wing.

In the 16th minute Mousa Dembele gave himself space away from Jerome Boateng and attempted a shot from range but his effort was weak and trickled wide of the post. The visitors then slowly started to grow into the game which started to silence the home crowd.

The silence turned into shock in the 22nd minute as Bayern keeper Ulreich launched a ball upfield which both Celtic centre-backs left, expecting Gordon to come forward to either clear or collect the ball. However Coman beat the goalkeeper to the ball, before cutting back on the inside and finishing well into an empty net.

Celtic nearly got themselves a leveller in the 31st minute when Armstrong and Dembele linked well, with the former sending a teasing ball across the face of goal which the latter just could not get a touch on.

The hosts continued to press for the equaliser with Forrest again nearly assisting Dembele, but the striker sent his header from the winger’s cross past the post.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with Celtic pressing and Forrest continuing to trouble with his pace. In the 49th minute the winger forced a good save from Ulreich as he came darting forward before setting up Armstrong, who fired on target but his shot was well palmed away.

In the 66th minute Gordon produced a wonder save as he got down well to stop a James Rodriguez’s low shot with his feet after the attacking midfielder was set up by Coman.

Bayern were mostly comfortable in the latter stages of the second half, seemingly happy to dominate possession without creating any real chances. However, they were still open to giving chances away as they did when Forrest’s shot took a deflection and almost snuck in.

Celtic finally got their equaliser and once again Forrest was at the heart of the move. The winger spotted McGregor moving into space in the box and chipped a pass for the Scotland international to finish past Ulreich in the 74th minute.

But the delight did not last long for the Celtic fans as Bayern hit back moments later. Alaba made a great run down the left wing and cross the ball into the box with Martinez getting his head to the ball and giving Bayern the lead again and the eventual victory.
