Barcelona lacked their usual cutting edge in the final third as they were held to a goalless draw by a resolute Olympiakos, in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League Group D tie.
Olympiakos 0 Barcelona 0
- Proto saves from Messi
- The keeper denies La Pulga Atomica again
- Fortounis pokes a strike straight at ter Stegen
- Suarez hits the crossbar
Barca controlled the majority of the play but struggled to break down a determined Olympiakos defence. The home side were also indebted to goalkeeper Silvio Proto for a number of fine saves.
In the second half Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both missed good opportunities, as the Greek giants held out for a well deserved 0-0 draw at home.
It was a relatively tight opening 15 minutes with Barcelona predictably in control of possession, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez probing for openings.
Yet, the home team had a decent penalty shout soon after when Omar Elabdellaoui appeared to be bumped to the ground by Samuel Umtiti in the box, though nothing was given.
In the 19th minute Denis Suarez thought he had scored as he beat Silvio Proto at his near post, but the offside flag went up. Two minutes later the keeper had to be on his toes as Messi fired in a strike from 15 yards, with Luis Suarez lurking, and he parried away at his near post.

Soon after a brilliant weaving run from the Argentina superstar saw him waltz through the heart of the Legend defence, only to be denied by Proto with a point-blank save.
Just before the break, the hosts had a rare counter as good interplay saw Kostas Fortounis set free though he could only toe-poke an effort straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen in goal. After the interval, the home team again defended resolutely for the opening quarter of an hour.
With that said, Messi would miss a great chance after Luis Suarez burst into the box and crossed it for him with Proto out of position. However, he was off-balance and put his effort wide of the far post.
Barca were dominating play but not creating mancy chances though Messi did find Suarez with a superb ball over the top in the 80th minute, but his lobbed attempt over the keeper bounced off the crossbar and over.
In the closing stages both Suarez and Messi had further attempts on goal which tested Proto, although the 34-year-old was up to the test as he kept both out.
