Forrest sends Celtic into Play-offs

Celtic progressed to the Play-off round of the Champions League with a 1-0 aggregate victory over Rosenborg.

James Forrest scored the only goal of the second leg in the 69th minute at Lerkendal Stadium in Trondheim on Wednesday evening after the first leg had ended goalless.

Forrest curled his effort in off the cross bar past a stranded goalkeeper André Hansen just as it looked as if this match would also  be heading for a stalemate.

Rosenborg were first to threaten through Milan Jevtovic on 14 minutes but his shot failed to test Craig Gordon.

Mikael Lustig then fired a volley over Hansen’s goal at the other end as Erik Sviatchenko headed a Jonny Hayes free-kick from the left-hand side on target, only for Nicklas Bendtner to clear the ball off the line.

Hansen then had to be at his best to deny Forrest from opening the scoring with 30 minutes played, with a fantastic reaction save from a close-range shot that the keeper somehow managed to tip over the goal.

Rosenborg became more adventurous in the second half but Yann-Erik de Lanlay fired Bendtner’s chested lay-off wide from 20 yards before their visitors finally breached the home defence.

Scott Sinclair played Forrest through into the Rosenborg box, and with a bit of luck after a poor touch, he smashed home from a tight angle.

Brendon Rodgers’ side wasted a further few opportunities to extend their lead, with substitute Leigh Griffiths and Lustig both going close, but were ultimately worthy winners ahead of the draw for the next round on Friday.
