Former Manchester United and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has passed his verdict on who he thinks will win the Ballon d’Or this time round.
Real Madrid and Croatia’s Luka Modric won the prestigious individual honour this season with Messi finishing a lowly fifth. However, the Barcelona talisman has hit the ground running this season and has taken his side to La Liga title along with Champions League semifinal.
While talking to Russia Today, Mourinho said that with Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus out of the Champions League, the path is clear for Messi to win the Ballon d’Or.
“He is having a phenomenal season and now, without Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League, he knows that the Ballon d’Or is waiting for him,” admitted Mourinho.
“When Messi has the ball and goes one on one, you’re dead. There’s no way to solve that problem. That’s why I don’t like to talk about individuals. The best way to stop him is as a team, creating a cage (for him).”
