Liverpool beat FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals to set up an enticing tie with FC Barcelona. The Merseysiders will now face an in-form Lionel Messi, who is currently the leading scorer in the competition. And they have received advice from an old foe on how to stop the Argentinian phenom.
Talking to Russia Today, Jose Mourinho revealed how Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool can deal with the in-form Lionel Messi. The Barcelona star has been brilliant in the Champions League this season and scored twice against Manchester United in the previous round.
Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is no stranger to the Argentinian magician, having faced him on several occasions. He even has some helpful tips for Liverpool on how to render him ineffective.
“Messi is having a phenomenal season and now with Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo outside this fight, he knows also that the golden ball is there waiting for him,” Mourinho told Russia Today (via Metro).
“Messi is easy to understand, but it’s not easy to create a cage to control him, because he comes from the right, but then stays in the middle. It’s very difficult.
“When Messi has the ball, one, one, one, you are dead. That’s why I never liked the individual man-to-man against Messi. Messi is a cage. You have to create a cage.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool will get a chance to cage Messi when they meet in the UEFA Champions League Semifinals. The first leg will be played in Barcelona on May 1, while the second will take place on May 7 in Liverpool.
