Ajax team that beat Juventus cost half of what Cristiano Ronaldo cost from Real Madrid

Ajax did the unthinkable when they managed to knock Real Madrid out in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), and they repeated the feat again in the quarter finals as they knocked out Juventus.

The team that played for Ajax had an average age of just 24 years old, and somewhat amazingly, six of the eleven players that played the match were not even born the last time the Dutch side made it to the semifinals of the competition in 1997.

If that wasn’t bizarre enough, what was even more incredible to learn was that Cristiano Ronaldo cost Juventus €100m from Real Madrid last summer while the entire Ajax eleven that started the game cost only €50m!

The guys at GiveMeSport (GMS) compiled a list of players that started for Ajax and did the homework on who cost what to build the young first team. Needless to say, it was pretty stunning.

GK: Andre Onana – €150,000

RB: Joel Veltman – free (academy)

CB: Matthijs de Ligt – free (academy)

CB: Daley Blind – €16m

LB: Noussair Mazraoui – free (academy)

CDM: Lasse Schone – free transfer

CDM: Frenkie de Jong – €1 (one euro)

RM: Hakim Ziyech €11m

CAM: Donny van de Beek – free (academy)

LM: David Neres – €12m

ST: Dusan Tadic – €11.5m

Total – €50.65m

Quite brilliant. Even Frenkie De Jong, who is moving on to Barcelona now, cost a sensational one euro, and will earn his club a massive profit. Football at its very best.
