Incredible statistic reveals Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League bad luck charm

Sometimes, football throws some weird statistics and correlations our way- things which are so extraordinary, that one would have to check twice before believing. A similar statistic was revealed after Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus went down to AFC Ajax in the UEFA Champions League.

As revealed by Duncan Alexander, Cristiano Ronaldo has been a part of the UEFA Champions League semifinals for every year since 2007, except two. The Portuguese phenom has only been eliminated before that stage in 2010 and 2019.

What’s curious here is that both years saw the return of popular movie franchise Toy Story to the theatres.

Toy Story 3 hit the theatres back in 2010, a year after Cristiano Ronaldo had signed for Real Madrid from Manchester United. During the 2009/10 season, Ronaldo and Real were eliminated from the Champions League in the Round of 16 by Lyon.

For the next eight years, the Sporting Lisbon graduate helped his side make it till at least the semifinals of the European premier competition. On four of those occasions, he even ended up lifting the trophy.

Ronaldo’s unfathomable streak was finally broken by Ajax on April 16, 2019, when they dumped Juventus out of the competition. The Portuguese international scored in both legs but couldn’t help his side overturn a three-two aggregate score.

It is a mere coincidence that later this year, Toy Story will return to the cinemas with the latest edition in the franchise; nine years after the previous one. Perhaps, then, it is the popular movie franchise and not a certain Argentinian, who is Ronaldo’s number one nemesis.
