Ajax of Amsterdam did not quite kick through the barn door in Turin, but it was a remarkable night nonetheless. Quite rightly, the Ajax players were beside themselves in glee.
After a stalemate in Amsterdam, most observers were of the opinion that Juventus were going to shade it. Erik Ten Hag’s band of boys however never cease to amaze. After going behind to a thumping Ronaldo header, Ajax clawed their way back with a Donny van de Beek’s equaliser. Matthijs De Ligt, towering over Alex Sandro and Daniele Rugani, sealed the win with a powerful header.
The players, rightfully chuffed, took their celebrations to the dressing room. In a video released by BT Sport, the Ajax players are shown to indulge in some well-deserved merrymaking.
The club is in contention for a treble this season; last achieved by Louis van Gaal’s famous Ajax side of 1994/95. Like that great Ajax side of the mid-90s, this one too is liable to be picked apart by more monied clubs. This season perhaps offers us the only chance to witness the flowering of a young group, which if kept together, could have rivalled the great Ajax teams of the past.
