With hattrick against Atletico Madrid, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo breaks all time European scoring record

Cristiano Ronaldo’s hattrick helped see Juventus through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and in the process, also put him in rarefied air.

Ronaldo struck once in the first half and twice in the second half to overturn the 2-0 loss that Juventus had suffered away to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their round of 16 encounter.

In the process, he also became the first player ever to notch up 125 goals in all European competitions.

Juventus had it all to do after a disastrous showing at the Wanda Metropolitano saw them downed 2-0 and Ronaldo reduced to gesturing to the crowd to rile them up.

However, they turned up the heat in the second leg, completely dominating Atletico Madrid and securing their spot in the quarterfinals. Ronaldo scored twice with headers and then converted from the spot to seal the turnaround.

The win was especially significant because the club had invested so heavily in Ronaldo purely to give them that extra thrust in the Champions League  – and that was exactly what he delivered.

Many had predicted Juventus to bow out after a listless 2-0 defeat in the first leg, but clearly, the Portuguese star had other ideas.
