Stoger can’t find fault with Leipzig draw

Borussia Dortmund head coach Peter Stoger praised a good performance from his side despite being held to a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig.

It was the third successive 1-1 stalemate following ties with Atalanta in the Europa League and Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

Against Leipzig, Jean-Kevin Augustin had opened the scoring at the Red Bull Arena before Marco Reus’ 38th minute equaliser, and that was the way it stayed following a competitive contest.

Reflecting on the game, Stoger said: “Today I felt the performance of the team was really good.

“After Augsburg the team had the impression that we hadn’t been quite on our game. But today we were present from the start against a very good opponent that is difficult to defend against, that has incredible quality going forward.

“Today I am very satisfied with what I saw over 90 minutes. For the equalising goal it was an outstanding pass. That’s exactly how we wanted to play the through-balls. Leipzig are a really good team, you could see that today. But if you pick out the right moment, you can hurt them.”

The result left Dortmund in third place on the Bundesliga standings, one point adrift of Schalke.

Midfielder Julian Weigl added: “The three points would of course have been important, but it was a step forward tonight. We showed an entirely different side compared to the match against Augsburg.

“We were more agile going forward, pressed higher up the pitch. It was a very entertaining game for the fans. With a bit of luck we could have gone ahead. The way we responded today was very good.”
