RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano says he is determined to help the club keep winning, as the Bulls look to maintain their pursuit of FC Bayern München at the top of the Bundesliga.
Currently, the Ralph Hasenhüttl-coached outfit are in second place in the standings on 22 points, four behind leaders Bayern and two ahead of Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04 in joint third.
As such, the 19-year-old centre-back takes the view that giving nothing less than every ounce of effort is necessary to maintain a challenge. The player joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in January this year.
He told the Bundesliga’s official website: “In the Bundesliga, you can’t get away with anything less than 100 per cent. We just try to win every game. We’re more than happy being second in the table because it backs up the success of last season.
“It wasn’t easy for me at Leipzig to begin with: being in a new club, in a new environment, at such a young age. But I always gave everything in training and the coach (Hasenhüttl) soon put his trust in me. I’ve tried to repay it. As a coach, he’s tactically very astute and trusts young players.
“Obviously we want to continue to mix it at the top and consolidate our position. We’re only looking at what we’re doing, though, and how we’re progressing. We want to pick up as many points as possible – then we’ll see where we are at the end of it.”
