Match report

It was a tight opening 10 minutes with Bayern in control of possession though Arjen Robben came close to opening the scoring soon after. After collecting the ball on the right wing, he cut inside in trademark fashion before seeing his effort on goal blocked by a defender.

It was the veteran Dutch winger who again went close in the 21st minute as he raced on to Kingsley Coman’s pass into the box, but he hit his left-footed strike into the side-netting.

The home side did put some pressure on the visitors goal after half an hour, with a series of crosses into the box though the Bavarians were just about able to clear.

Just before the break, it appeared the game had a pivotal moment as Gideon Jung saw a seemingly harsh straight red card for a cynical but not entirely dangerous foul on Coman near the halfway line.

After the break, Arturo Vidal had a strike that was headed into the bottom corner deflected just wide as Bayern’s pressure continued. The resistance was broken in the 52nd minute as clumsy defending from Hamburg saw a clearance hit Thomas Müller, before the rebound fell to Corentin Tolisso to score.

The 10 men of the Red Shorts were defending in numbers for most of the second stanza without Bayern offering much of a cutting edge in the final third, even after Tolisso’s opener. Yet, Thiago Alcântara did go close with a curling effort which hit the post with Christian Mathenia beaten.

Mats Hummels then put a header just wide from a corner in the 77th minute. There was a flurry of chances in the closing stages for Bayern as they pressed for a second, although Robben was denied by Mathenia and Tolisso’s header rattled the post after a deflection.
