VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach have suffered a major blow to their season with news that promising midfielder Laszlo Benes will miss the next three months with a broken foot.
Benes broke his metatarsal in his left foot on Tuesday during a friendly against Dutch side VVV Venlo and the club confirmed the news on their official Twitter account shortly after.
The 20-year-old who’s been dubbed ‘the new Marek Hamsik’ by Slovakian media joined the Bundesliga side from Zilina last season and looked set to feature more prominently under manager Dieter Hecking this campaign.
Mönchengladbach assistant coach Dirk Bremser bemoaned the timing of the injury due to Tobias Strobl (knee), Ibrahima Traore (thigh) and Josip Drmic (knee) all facing lengthy lay-offs.
“It’s a real blow for Laci, but it is for us, too, because it means another long-term absentee,” he told the Bundesliga website.
Benes made his senior international debut for Slovenskí sokoli against Lithuania this year.
