Raul Bobadilla has joined VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach for a second spell, signing a deal that will see him remain at Borussia-Park until 2019.
The Paraguayan striker, who represented Die Fohlen in 58 Bundesliga matches from 2009 to 2012, was former club FC Augsburg’s top scorer last season with a tally of 10 goals in all competitions.
Speaking to the media at the player’s official unveiling, coach Dieter Hecking explained the tactical logic behind his decision to reunite with the 30-year old.
“We wanted to add a completely different attacking player to the strikers that we already have in Lars Stindl, Thorgan Hazard and Raffael,” he said
“Then the opportunity arose to sign Raul Bobadilla. I know that it was always extremely hard for our centre-backs to face him. I have, as an opposing manager and now as his manager, the utmost respect for him and his style of play,” he continued.
“Raul can play on the flanks but he will play down the middle for us. In that position, he can make every centre-half’s life very uncomfortable.
“With Raffael and Lars Stindl, we have two central attacking players who like running with the ball. Raul likes to play off the shoulder of the last defender, going into tackles, is very strong in one-on-one situations and scores lots of goals.
“He can control the ball well and is good at shaking off players who try to tackle him. These are his strong points,” Hecking added.
The player himself also expressed his delight at sealing the €2m deal.
“I’m really happy to be back in my old home again. There are still a few players and staff here who I know from my previous spell,” he told reporters.
