Orban named RB Leipzig captain

RB Leipzig have announced that central defender Willi Orban will take over the captain’s armband from Dominik Kaiser, who made just seven Bundesliga starts last season.

The 24-year-old was one of the stars of a side that enjoyed a remarkable maiden campaign in the German top flight, as they finished runners-up to perennial champions FC Bayern München.

The Bulls ended 2016/17 with the third best defensive record in the division with just 39 goals conceded, trailing both Bayern and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in this department.

Coach Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed that Orban will now captain his team. He told reporters, “Willi Orban will be the new captain. He always sets an example and is well-respected within the team.”

Meanwhile, the former Germany youth international also expressed his determination to lead by example in 2017/18. He said, “It’s a real show of faith from the club, and I want to justify their decision. As captain, I want to lead the way with my performances and be a link between the team and the management.”

Leipzig begin their new Bundesliga season at Schalke on 19 August.
