Leipzig reject massive Reds bid for Keita

Naby Keita

Ambitious German side RB Leipzig confirmed they have recently rejected a mammoth bid for star midfielder Naby Keita amid interest from Liverpool.

The English giants have been heavily linked with the Guinea international over the past 12 months, And while the Die Bullen did not disclose the Reds opened up a bidding war, Red Bull co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz revealed an offer was rejected.

The Bundesliga club have been firm on their stance of not selling any of their key performers ahead of their maiden UEFA Champions League campaign, and Mateschitz reiterated they are in a strong financial position to resist offers from Europe's elite clubs.

"We won't sell players who are still under contract just to earn a lot of money," the Austrian tycoon told Sport Bild. "Let me give you an example: Only recently, we received a €75 million bid for Naby Keita. No way!

"He is still under contract and he will fulfil it. Like I said: To sell him would not only be evidence that we don't have the belief to our fans but also send the wrong signal to our other players, like Timo Werner for instance. He's also sought-after."

Keita, who has been likened to Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante due to his slim frame and playing style, scored eight goals registered as many assists in 31 league games during his debut season in the German top flight.
