Bayern München were beaten for just the second time this season as a late Jhon Cordoba goal gave Mainz an unlikely 2-1 win over the Bundesliga leaders at the Allianz Arena.
It was a classic smash-and-grab performance from Mainz, who produced less than a third of Bayern’s chances on goal, but emerged victorious nonetheless.
Mainz deflected some intense early pressure to grab the lead through Jairo Samperio in the 26th minute.
The home side played an open, expansive game in search of an equaliser and Loris Karius had to be at his best to deny Arjen Robben shortly before half time.
However, the Holland international would get his side on level terms in the 64th minute with a thunderbolt from over 20 yards out.
Mainz continued to sit back and invite pressure, which allowed them to catch the Bavarians on the break in the 86th minute when Julian Baumgartlinger played Cordoba in, who slotted neatly past Manuel Neuer to give his side surprise 2-1 win.
Elsewhere, BVB Dortmund were able to take full advantage of Bayern’s slip up with a 2-0 win over Darmstadt through goals from Adrian Ramos and Erik Durm in the 38th and 53rd minutes respectively.
Borussia MG moved up to fourth place in the Bundesliga standings with a 4-0 thrashing of VfB Stuttgart at Borussia Park.
They were 1-0 up at half time after Thorgan Hazard had given them the lead in the 16th minute, but the real fireworks began after the break.
Raffael doubled the lead in the 60th minute before Patrick Herrmann made it 3-0 just eight minutes later. To add insult to injury Kevin Grosskreutz put the ball into his own net in the first minute of second half injury time to complete the scoring.
Bremen moved out of the relegation playoff spot after they hammered Leverkusen 4-1 at the BayArena.
The visitors got off to the best possible start when Fin Bartels gave them the lead in just the fifth minute of the match. Claudio Pizarro scored in the 55th and 65th minutes to take the score to 3-0.
Papy Djilobodji gave Leverkusen a lifeline in the 69th minute when he put the ball past his own goalkeeper, but Pizarro complete his hattrick in the 83rd minute to secure a big win for Bremen.
Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin beat Frankfurt 2-0, TSG Hoffenheim overcame FC Augsburg 2-1 and Schalke 04 got back to winning ways with a 3-2 win over Hamburger SV.
