JDT record narrow 1-0 win over Petaling Jaya City FC to remain top of Malaysia Super League standings

Reigning champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) recorded a narrow 1-0 win over Petaling Jaya City FC at the Petaling Jaya Stadium on Saturday in the Malaysia Super League.

Their seventh win of the domestic season meant that Johor remained at the top of the Malaysian top flight with 23 points from nine games while PJ City FC now has just eight points from nine games going down to their fifth defeat of the campaign.

Though the winning margin remained one goal in the MSL fixture, visitors JDT were always in control of the game and gave little away to the Petaling attack in the 90 minutes.

The all-important goal which turned out to be the difference between the two sides came in the 26th minute of the match when bright Safawi Rasid led an attack along the right wing.

Safawi managed to dink a clever pass into the Petaling penalty box and Syafiq Ahmad was there to pounce on it. The JDT man saw that the PJ City goalkeeper had progressed from his line and produced a looping effort over the keeper and into the goal to make it 1-0.

Safawi had already hit the woodwork before the goal as he toe-poked his effort onto the far post from an acute angle in the 20th minute. JDT could have doubled their advantage before break had the young Malaysian starlet been more ruthless in front of the goal as Safawi once again fired wide from a similar position just before the stroke of half time.

There were also misses from JDT hitman Diogo in the first half, but it didn’t matter as JDT broke hardly any sweat to collect three more points to their tally. The Southern Tigers will now face PKNS FC in their next league fixture on April 20.
