Southeast Asia will have plenty of representation in the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship, with Thailand and Vietnam both qualifying for the finals. The two ASEAN sides met on the final day of the qualifiers, where Vietnam’s win ensured their passage to the main tournament. And their performance on the day was so good that even the opposition fans chanted their name!
Vietnam and Thailand both secured their qualification to the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship, after a thrilling encounter on matchday three.
Being the hosts, Thailand were already guaranteed a place in next year’s tournament. On the other hand, Vietnam needed all three points to have any chance of qualifying to the next round.
The Golden Dragons started off brilliantly, taking the lead in the seventeenth minute, courtesy of Ha Duc Chinh. They then doubled their lead shortly after the break through Nguyen Hoang Duc. A third goal was added by Nguyen Thanh Chung in the sixty-third minute before Tran Thanh Son put the icing on the cake for a memorable four-nil win in stoppage time.

Vietnam’s performance drew plaudits from all around the continent, with many praising their style of play. Moreover, the Golden Dragons put in such a good performance, that the travelling Thai fans on the day also joined in the applause!
The away end gave a standing ovation to Vietnam, while also chanting their name. In response, the Vietnamese players acknowledge the Thai fans and proceeded to applaud the away section.
