2018 runners-up Vietnam began their 2020 AFC U-23 Championship Qualifiers campaign with a resounding 6-0 win over minnows Brunei at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Friday.
Ha Duch Chinh opened the scoring for the Golden Dragons in the 11th minute heading in a beautifully weighted cross from full back Thanh Thinh before Nguyen Thanh Chung made it 2-0 in the 24th minute after a pinball inside the Brunei penalty area.
The third goal also came in similar fashion after a melee inside the Vietnam box and this time it was Dinh Thanh Binh was the beneficiary of it all as he gave Park Hang-seo’s side a 3-0 lead just before the half-time whistle.

The Vietnam head coach introduced Nguyen Quang Hai at the half-time break and the newly named captain had a hand in all three goals that Vietnam scored in the second half.
First, he danced past defenders inside the box before setting the ball up for Trieu Viet Hung to produce a smart finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box and make it 4-0 around the hour mark.
Then, Quang Hai was brought down cynically inside the box in the 75th minute — the Brunei defender seeing the red and also the referee pointing to the spot. It was Hyunh Tan Sinh who took the penalty for Vietnam and made it 5-0.
Quang Hai would have his goal before the final whistle as Vietnam won another penalty in the dying embers of the game. Quang Hai send the goalkeeper the wrong way to round off a 6-0 victory fro the Vietnamese.
