The Vietnam U-23 team is all set to play their upcoming qualification games for the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship. They have been drawn in Group K in the qualification tournament.
The matches will be held within Vietnam itself, on 22nd, 24th and 26th March when they will face Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand respectively – the other teams in Group K.
Meanwhile, Park Hang-seo the team’s head coach, announced officially that Nguyen Quang Hai will captain the side. The young midfielder has been prolific on the field for Hanoi FC. Nguyen Hoang Duc (Viettel) and Tran Thanh Son (Hoang Anh Gia Lai) will be the two main deputies of Nguyen Quang Hai.
Though this will be the first time that Quang Hai will lead the team at the U-23 level, he is not alien to being team captain. Quang Hai was the captain of his U-20 Vietnam team in the FIFA U-20 World Cup held in 2017.
The Hanoi FC star spoke to the media afterwards. “Being honoured with the captain’s armband, I will try my best to urge my teammates to practice to get the best preparation for the forthcoming matches. This time there are many new players who gather with the team for the first time. During each training session, we will talk more to find a common relationship and get better coordination when we enter the matches. As a long-term player under coach Park, I will share with my new teammates what I have learned from the coaching staff, so that everyone can understand and soon adapt to Park’s training.”
Quang Hai also talked about how his experience with his club and with the Vietnam national team helped him improve as a player.
“When young players gather with the national teams, one of the most important factors is to get used to the working style of the coaching staff, besides focusing on each training session to fully understand the philosophy of the coaching style,” he opined.
Based on the opponents that they find alongside themselves in Group K, Quang Hai is sure that the matches are not going to be easy. “For each rivals, the players must prepare well for themselves as well as perform well under the direction of the coaching board,” he concluded.
Aged 21, Quang Hai has been one of the breakout performers in the V.League 1 last year, where he played a pivotal role in Hanoi FC being crowned champions. Despite the young age, the midfielder has been getting a substantial amount of game time that should ideally reflect well on his performance in the games that follow.
