Ceres-Negros moved one step closer to the AFC Cup 2019 ASEAN Zone semi-finals after coming from behind to beat Persija Jakarta 3-2 at the Gelora Bung Karno on Tuesday.
Stephan Schrock’s sensational second half seals come-back win
Following a goalless first half – in which Persija spurned a glorious opportunity to take the lead when Bruno Matos had a penalty saved by Roland Muller – the deadlock was finally broken in the 49th minute.
AFC Cup 2019: Persija Jakarta 1-0 Ceres Negros (Sandy Sute 49′)
An inch-perfect freekick from the right by Ismed Sofyan landed on the head of Sandi Sute, who guided the ball in at the near post to put the hosts in front.
AFC Cup 2019: Persija Jakarta 2-0 Ceres Negros (Bruno Matos 57′)
Three minutes before the hour mark, Matos made amends by doubling Persija’s lead as he got in behind the opposition defence to latch on Novri Setiawan’s flick-on header and finish past Muller.
At this stage, it looked as though the Indonesian outfit would go on to claim the win and throw Group G wide open but Ceres – who had won all three of their previous games in AFC Cup 2019 – had other ideas.
AFC Cup 2019: Persija Jakarta 2-1 Ceres Negros (Miguel Tanton 70′)
Miguel Tanton pulled one back in the 70th minute when his freekick from the left wing sailed over a sea of players before creeping in past Andritany Ardhiyasa at the back post.
Then, with five minutes remaining, the visitors duly equalised when a lovely floated cross by Stephan Schrock was met by Bienvenido Maranon with a bullet header into the back of the net.
AFC Cup 2019: Persija Jakarta 2-2 Ceres Negros (Bienvenido Maranon 85′)
Ceres could have been forgiven for being satisfied with a point having come from two goals down, but there was still time for one final twist in the second minute of injury-time.
Again, Schrock was the creator as he found space down the left before curling a lovely cross into the box, where Mike Ott emerged as the hero by ghosting in ahead of his marker to volley the winner past Andritany.
AFC Cup 2019: Persija Jakarta 2-3 Ceres Negros (Mike Ott 90+2′)
With the result, Ceres are now five points clear at the top of Group G and can secure their place in the ASEAN Zone semis with victory over Shan United next week.
