Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba has suffered a career-threatening injury while playing in the Chinese Super League for Shanghai Shenhua.
The 31-year-old Senegal international broke his leg after an innocuous challenge in the 63rd minute while playing in a derby against Shanghai SIPG on Sunday.
Ba’s left leg gave way beneath the knee as he fell to the ground after appearing to get his leg tangled with his opponent’s while his studs were in contact with the turf.
The former Newcastle player is the top scorer in China’s top division, having struck 14 goals in 18 games since he moved from Turkish club Besiktas in June last year.
Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano said: “It could end his professional career. I would rather lose the game than lose Ba.”
English Premier league side Chelsea wished their former player a speedy recovery tweeting: “All at Chelsea FC send our best wishes to former striker @dembabafoot. Get well soon Demba.”
