Adriano came off the bench to hand Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors a 1-0 win at Urawa Red Diamonds on Tuesday to send them top of Group G in AFC Champions League 2019.
In a keenly-contested encounter at Saitama Stadium 2002 against two teams that traditionally have enjoyed success in the competition, a draw initially looked the likeliest outcome given the tie was proving to be a real battle of attrition.
It was, however, the visitors who looked the likelier of the two sides to score as they showed greater attacking intent, while Urawa were surprisingly lacklustre in attack despite boasting the likes of Shinzo Koroki, Yosuke Kashiwagi and Yuki Muto.
But, with 13 minutes remaining, the deadlock was finally broken as substitute Adriano had the desire impact that was expected of him when he was introduced shortly after the hour mark, exchanging a clever one-two with Brazilian compatriot Ricardo Lopes before effortlessly stroking a shot past Shusaku Nishikawa to grab all three points for Jeonbuk.
