AFC Champions League 2019: 5 Talking Points as Buriram United register a famous win over Jeonbuk

Thailand giants Buriram United registered a famous 1-0 win over K League side Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC in the AFC Champions League 2019 group stage to earn their first three points of the tournament.

Here are five talking points from the encounter.

Jeonbuk dominate early proceedings but Buriram held on

The match started with both the sides taking their own sweet time to pick up a rhythm. After a few early exchanges, the K League giants started showing off why they came into the encounter as the favourites.

The home side, however, made sure that they are not overawed by the Jeonbuk attacks and were duly awarded for their patience.

Supachai Jaided rattles the woodwork

The most eye-catching moment of the first half came in the 27th minute when Buriram were finding their rhythm and threatening the Jeonbuk side. And Buriram’s 20-year-old forward Supachai was in the thick of things.

The youngster picked up the ball on the edge of the box, turned around and unleashed a left-footed shot. The ball beat the Jeonbuk goalkeeper Song Bum-keun but struck the post and went out. This was the closest either sides came to opening the scoring in the first half.

Supachok Sarachart gives Buriram the lead

The hosts came back from the break with only a win in their sight. And they were soon into the driver’s seat after Supachok Sarachart gave them the lead five minutes into the second half.

Pedro Junior was the creator as he received the ball in the midfield and released Supachok whose left-footed strike on the near post beat the Jeonbuk goalkeeper and sent the hosts ahead.

Jeonbuk push Buriram but couldn’t score the equaliser

The K League side were clearly rattled by the Buriram goal and fought back with even more purpose. They constructed an attack after another but the Buriram defence held on.

The closest they came to equalising was when Ricardo Lopes struck the crossbar in the 69th minute. That was all from them, however, as they finished the match on the losing side.

Can the Thai side change their fortunes?

Buriram came into the match with only one win from their last four encounters. While they were hammered 3-0 by Urawa Reds in the AFC Champions League, they had registered only one win out of three matches in the Thai League.

And few gave them the chance tonight. However, they defied all odds to get the better of Jeonbuk and now they can use this result as a launch pad to turn things around for them in the season.
