Ceres-Negros, Global Cebu draw first blood in PFL Finals

Ceres-Negros and Global Cebu both have one foot in the Philippines Football League final after claiming victories in their respective semi-final ties at the weekend.

Global were first to be in action at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Saturday coming up against Meralco Manila, who had finished the regular season on top of the table.

It initially looked as though Meralco would be the ones with the advantage as they opened the scoring two minutes after the hour mark; Tahj Minniecon converting from the penalty spot after he had been tripped inside the area.

But in the 90th minute, Wesley Santos equalised for Global as he made a darting run to the near post to meet Hikaru Minegishi’s corner with a deft header into the back of the net.

And, remarkably, in the third minute of injury-time, Minegishi popped up complete a come-from-behind win for his side, clinically sweeping a first-time effort from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

On Sunday, there was more late drama in the other semi as Ceres left it late to beat Kaya FC-Makati 1-0 at the UMAK Football Stadium.

A draw had looked on the cards with neither side able to find the breakthrough throughout the 90 minutes.

However, in the 92nd minute, Stephan Schrock came to Busmen’s rescue as he danced past three defenders to find space inside the area, before getting just enough on his shot to beat Ref Cuaresma.

The second leg for both last-four ties will take place this Saturday with Ceres hosting Kaya at the Panaad Park and Stadium, while Global will be the designated visitors as they look to consolidate their lead against Meralco at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
