Albirex Niigata (S) complete quadruple for second year running

Albirex Niigata (S) completed the quadruple for the second consecutive year after beating Global Cebu on penalties to win the Singapore Cup.

Following a 2-2 draw in Saturday’s final at the Jalan Besar Stadium, it was the White Swans who held their nerve to claim a 3-1 win in the shootout.

Having already won the Community Shield, S.League and League Cup in 2017, their latest triumph meant they again completed the clean sweep having achieved the same last season.

However, they were certainly given a real test by tournament invitees Global, who remain in the running to win their domestic Philippines Football League.

It was the White Swans who broke the deadlock on Saturday two minutes after the half-hour mark, when Tsubasa Sano scored with a volley after Ryota Nakai had chested Shuto Inaba’s lofted pass into his path.

But, just three minutes after the restart, Global levelled the scores when defender Wesley Santos headed home Hikaru Minegishi’s right-wing delivery.

Extra-time eventually followed and it was who Albirex reclaimed the lead in the 95th minute, courtesy of Kento Nagasaki’s deflected effort.

Again, Global refused to give in and another lovely freekick by Minegishi paved the way for Paolo Salenga to head another equaliser past Yosuke Nozawa.

With neither side able to score again in the remainder of extra-time, the final then went to the dreaded penalty shootout.

Surprisingly, the usually-deadly Sano blazed over but he was the only one who failed from the spot for the White Swans, with Nagasaki, Shoichiro Sakamoto and Naofumi Tanaka all on target.

Unfortunately for Global, it was a different story with Minegishi the only one who found the back of the net, as misses from Santos, Darryl Roberts and Salenga handed Albirex their third straight Singapore Cup.
