Teerasil Dangda netted a fine double as Muangthong United booked their spot in the Thai League Cup final with a 2-1 win over BEC Tero Sasana on Saturday.
Teerasil opened the scoring at the Rajamangala Stadium two minutes before halftime, as he was picked out by Theerathon Bunmathan and perfectly placed a looping header into the far corner.
BEC Tero did pull level in the 64th minute when Jaka Ihbeisheh lashed home an unstoppable effort from the penalty spot, following a clumsy foul by Nukoolkit Krutyai on Sadney Urikhob inside the area.
But just three minutes later, another lovely assist by Theerathon saw him take out the entire opposition defence with a low cross, paving the way for Teerasil to slide in at the far post and net what ultimately proved to be the winner.
It was a spirited display from Muangthong and keeps alive their hopes of silverware in 2017, following their elimination from the FA Cup on Wednesday and their ailing hopes of catching leaders Buriram United in the T1 League.
It will be Chiangrai United, the same team that eliminated the Twin Qilins from the FA Cup, that will meet them in the League Cup final after their 1-0 victory over Ratchaburi Mitr Phol at the Supachalasai Stadium.
The only goal of that last-four encounter came in the 14th minute, when Felipe Azevedo got in ahead of his marker to meet Piyaphon Phanichakul’s right-wing deliver and send a fine first-time finish past Ukrit Wongmeema.
