Thai League T1: Muangthong keep up chase of Buriram

Muangthong United maintained the six-point gap between them and Thai League T1 leaders Buriram United on Sunday with a 4-1 away triumph over Suphanburi.

The Twin Qilins broke the deadlock after nine minutes in fortuitous circumstances when Leandro Assumpcao’s attempt to block a clearance by Elizeu saw the ball ricochet off his shin and inadvertently loop over a hapless Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool.

Suphanburi mustered a reply just three minutes later as Nicolas Velez converted from the spot, after Nattaphong Samana had been brought down inside the area by Tristan Do.

However, Muangthong reclaimed the lead in the 35th minute when Assumpcao raced onto Teerasil Dangda’s through-pass and clinically finished past the onrushing Sinthaweechai, before a third arrived courtesy of a trademark Heberty strike as the Brazilian danced past a couple of defenders before unleashing a left-footed drive in off the post.

By then, the contest was effectively over but – adding insult to injury – Suphanburi gifted the visitors a fourth with nine minutes remaining; Sinthaweechai inexplicably allowing a 25-yard back-pass from Adul Lahso slip past his foot and into goal.

Despite the emphatic victory, the Twin Qilins remain six points behind Buriram United, who – fuelled by a Jaja Coelho hat-trick and a brace by Diogo – cruised to a 5-1 rout of Sisaket on Saturday.

Following a disappointing loss to Pattaya United last weekend, Bangkok United got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Nakhon Ratchasima.

Teeratep Winothai got the Angels on their way right on the stroke of halftime when he cleverly made his way in behind the opposition defence and found the bottom corner with a neat finish.

Eight minutes into the second half, French centre-back Yohan Tavares met Mario Gjurovski’s corner with a perfectly-guided header past Weera Koedpudsa to make sure of the victory.

Over at the Leo Stadium, Bangkok Glass produced a spirited display to overcome a 26th-minute red card to Jhasmani Campos and come from behind to beat Chiangrai United 2-1.

It initially looked as though Chiangrai would make the most of their numerical advantage as Felipe Azevedo fired them in front moments before the break, only for Apisit Sorada to level the scores for the hosts in the 64th minute.

And, in the fifth minute of injury-time, the Glass Rabbits completed a remarkable revival as Surachat Sareepim climbed highest at the back post and head home the winner.

Elsewhere on Sunday, bottom side Super Power Samut Prakan‘s miserable campaign continued as they were beaten 6-2 by Ratchaburi Mitr Phol, who were helped on their way by doubles from Javier Acuna and Rungrath Poomchanteuk.

Meanwhile, an 89th-minute own goal by Lee Won-young saw Navy rein in a two-goal deficit with just eight minutes remaining for a 2-2 draw at home to Pattaya United.

Finally, Chonburi were the biggest winners of the weekend with a 5-0 thrashing of Thai Honda Ladkrabang, BEC Tero Sasana edged Port 2-1, while a Kabfah Boonmatoon hat-trick salvaged a 3-3 draw for Sukhothai against Ubon UMT United.
