Important wins for Thailand and Indonesia

After drawing against each other in their opening match, both Thailand and Indonesia bounced back with victories in the second round of the men’s football competition at the SEA Games.

While Vietnam still top Group B with two wins from two, Indonesia and Thailand now lie in second and third place respectively after picking up their first wins on Thursday.

Thailand 1-0 Timor-Leste

Thailand made hard work of it but managed to emerge with a 1-0 victory over a spirited Timor-Leste side.

There was precious little to write home about during a dour first half, with only scattered half-chances falling to both teams.

Timor-Leste looked dangerous on the counter-attack, and Henrique Wilson nearly scored in the 37th minute after one such move, though he sent his shot flying into the side netting.

Chaiyawat Buran came closest to scoring for Thailand, but his shot was comfortably saved by Timor-Leste goalkeeper Fagio Agusta.

The War Elephants looked better in the second half, however, and they eventually were able to wear down their opponent’s defence.

A cross came in from the right in the 58th minute, and K. Worachit was able to rise unchallenged and head home, earning his side a valuable victory.

Indonesia produced an impressive performance to put three unanswered goals past the Philippines at the Shah Alam Stadium.

The Red and Whites dominated from the first whistle, and took the lead after just seven minutes when Septian David latched onto a cross from the right and fired the ball into the net.

Indonesia kept pressing but had to wait until first-half stoppage time for their second of the evening. A well-worked move ended with Muhammad Hargianto applying the finishing touches to put his side 2-0 up.

It was a similar story in the second half with Indonesia bossing play, and they were rewarded with their third just before the hour-mark, Saddil Ramdani scoring with a superb long-range effort from 20 yards out to seal the emphatic win.
