Persija Jakarta look to be in the driver’s seat after they recorded a 1-0 win against PSM Makassar in the first leg of the Piala Indonesia 2019 final on Sunday.
The first leg of the final of Indonesia’s premier cup competition saw two of the country’s biggest clubs put on a neck-and-neck battle in front of a brimming Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Persija emerged as the champions of Liga 1 last season, but headed into the match with their primary objective being turning around a season which has been disastrous for them domestically as well as in the continental level at the AFC Cup 2019.

Meanwhile, PSM have flown the Indonesian flag high in the AFC Cup this season reaching the ASEAN Zonal Semifinals where they lost out to Vietnam’s Becamex Binh Duong on away goals.
The first half in Jakarta was a edgy affair with neither sides able to find a breakthrough in the opposition defence meaning that the two teams went into the half-time break with the score goalless.
However, the all-important goal would come in the second half, just two minutes before time, through an unlikely source. It was Persija defender Ryuji Utomo who popped up to find the winning goal and give Persija a 1-0 advantage heading into the second leg.
The second leg will be held at the Andi Mattalatta Stadium in Makassar on July 28. The winner of the cup will also be eligible to represent Indonesia in the play-off rounds of the AFC Cup 2020.
