Xavi Hernandez’s Al Sadd SC have been crowned the champions of Qatar after a comprehensive 7-2 win over Al Ahli SC in a Qatar Stars League match at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on Thursday.

With second-placed Al Duhail SC going down to Al Kharaitiyat 1-0 in another game on the match day, Al Sadd took an unassailable lead at the top of the table with one match to spare.

The Barcelona legend’s side now have 54 points from 21 games — seven more than the second-placed Al Duhail.

It was Algeria international Baghdad Bounedjah who starred for Al Sadd again as he scored a hattrick to help his club win against Al Ahli. He now has 39 goals to his name from 21 matches in the Qatar Stars League.

Qatar national team captain Hassan Al-Haydos scored a brace while Akram Afif and Korea Republic international Jung Woo-young popped up with a goal apiece to complete the rout.

This is Al Sadd’s 14th domestic league title making them the most successful Qatari club by some distance, however it has come after a wait of six years — their last title coming in 2012-13 season.

The league triumph also ensured that Xavi completed a clean sweep of domestic titles in Qatar having won the Emir’s Cup, Qatar Cup and Sheikh Jassim Cup previously.

Al Sadd also feature the likes of former Atletico Madrid captain Gabi, reigning Asian Footballer of the Year Abdelkarim Hassan and Qatar defender Ro Ro among others.
