Singapore got the better of hosts Malaysia by a solitary goal in the second match of the Airmarine Cup 2019 to qualify for the final of the competition.
The visitors started on the front foot and were the better team throughout the first half. Malaysia, however, regrouped after the break and upped the ante in the second half. coming excruciatingly close to opening the scoring on multiple occasions.
However, it was Faris Ramli and Singapore who had the last laugh as the forward slotted home in the 82nd minute to send Singapore in the final.
The first opportunity of the match fell to Muhammad Yasir Bin Hanapi but he couldn’t beat the Malaysian goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi in a one-on-one situation. The hosts hit back immediately through Irfan Zakaria, but the defender’s header from a corner went just wide of the post.
The visitors kept up the pressure in the first half but couldn’t find the breakthrough. And when the hosts returned with clearer intentions in the second half, it seemed that Singapore will have to make do with a place in the third-place match.
However, the Malaysia forwards were guilty of missing multiple opportunities, two of which fell to captain Zaquan Adha. Mohamadou Sumareh was guilty of spurring a golden chance as well. And the hosts were made to pay in the 82nd minute by Faris Ramli.
Singapore will now play Oman for the Airmarine Cup while hosts Malaysia will fight for the third-place with Afghanistan.
